Kathleen Newton of SEMCA Michigan Works! was awarded the “Shining Star” Award by the Michigan Works! Association during the Association’s 2023 Annual Conference for going above and beyond to help job seekers and employers in the Metro Detroit area.
The Shining Star awards celebrate Michigan Works! frontline staff who, through dedication and outstanding contributions to workforce development, personify the Michigan Works! mission.

Kathleen, a Program Coordinator in Youth Services at SEMCA Michigan Works! located at the Livonia American Job Center, has left a significant mark through her impactful initiatives. She’s been the driving force behind programs such as the SEMCA Young Professional Program and the Geographic Information Systems initiative. These efforts have created invaluable opportunities for both employment and education, benefiting numerous clients.
One striking illustration of her leadership is her active involvement in the Building Skills Summer Camps, a collaborative effort with the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights. This innovative program provides youth with a unique summer learning experience in the building trades, promoting workforce development, bolstering businesses, empowering communities, and inspiring young individuals. The success of this program has set a noteworthy precedent for WIOA youth participation and pre-apprenticeship training throughout southeast Michigan.
