Priority of Service for Veterans

Veterans with at least one day of active military service and eligible spouses are eligible to receive Priority of Service. Priority of Service allows veterans and eligible spouses to receive Michigan Works! services before or instead of non-veterans. To take advantage of this entitlement, be sure to identify yourself as a veteran or eligible spouse to Michigan Works! Service Center staff upon entering or contacting a service center.

I personally benefited greatly from the 24-hour Veterans list. Through them, I was able to connect with many employers throughout Southeast Michigan. Receiving them (the list) meant I could have advance access to jobs, and perhaps have a better chance of being hired by employers.

For additional information on Priority of Service, call 800.285.9675 to be connected to your nearest Service Center or view the interactive map to locate a Michigan Works! American Jobs Center.

Helmets to Hardhats

Helmets to Hardhats is a national, nonprofit program that connects National Guard, Reserve, retired and transitioning active-duty military service members with skilled training and quality career opportunities in the construction industry.

Most career opportunities offered by the program are connected to federally-approved apprenticeship training programs. Such training is provided by the trade organizations themselves at no cost to the veteran. No prior experience is needed; in fact, most successful placements start with virtually no experience in their chosen field.
