SEMCA Michigan Works! is proud to announce the launch of the Fresh Start Workforce Initiative (FSWI), a new program designed to help system-involved individuals in Monroe County rebuild their lives and successfully re-enter the workforce.
Funded by the Michigan Justice Fund, an initiative of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, FSWI brings together local partners to provide job readiness training, skills development, job placement, and housing assistance for individuals with misdemeanor or felony convictions who face barriers to employment and stability.
“Returning citizens are a chronically under-engaged segment of our workforce,” said Ashley Carter, Director of the Michigan Justice Fund. “We are energized by this new partnership and the support it will provide to individuals in Monroe County looking to advance their careers and develop the skills essential to maintaining stable employment.”
Services are delivered through the SEMCA Michigan Works! Monroe American Job Center, to give participants direct access to career coaching, training opportunities, and supportive services that promote long-term self-sufficiency.
“The Fresh Start Workforce Initiative is about more than employment,” said Greg Pitoniak, CEO of SEMCA. “It’s about rebuilding lives, strengthening communities, and giving justice-involved citizens the tools they need to succeed.”
In collaboration with the Monroe County Opportunity Program (MCOP), the initiative includes housing assistance as a key component—addressing one of the most critical barriers to successful re-entry. By combining workforce and housing support, FSWI offers a comprehensive, wraparound approach to help participants achieve lasting stability.
Over the next two years, FSWI aims to serve at least 80 residents of Monroe County, providing individualized plans and coordinated services to support their transition into meaningful employment.
Community engagement is already underway. Men on a Mission, a local group connecting residents with employment and training opportunities, will host an Opportunity Job and Resource Fair on November 5 from 3 to 6 p.m. at The Opportunity Center (120 Eastchester, Monroe). SEMCA Michigan Works! staff will be on hand to share program information and connect attendees with available services.
