The late Louis “Lou” Sterling, Jr. was posthumously honored with the Michigan Works! Association Shining Star Award for his dedication and outstanding contributions to workforce development. The Shining Star Awards celebrate Michigan Works! Agency frontline staff who, through their service and commitment, personify the Michigan Works! mission.
Lou served as a Career Specialist at the SEMCA Michigan Works! Livonia American Job Center for more than 15 years, beginning his career during the height of the automotive industry crisis. From those early days through every challenge that followed, he helped job seekers navigate uncertainty with empathy, humor, and respect. His steady leadership and compassion helped thousands of individuals find their footing during difficult times.
“Throughout his career, Louis dedicated himself to helping others find hope and opportunity, even in the most challenging circumstances. Known for a calm presence and genuine care, he built trust with every customer, served and supported colleagues with mentorship and encouragement,” said Greg Pitoniak, CEO of SEMCA Michigan Works!. “This commitment reminds us that workforce development is more than a job — it’s about lifting people up and guiding them toward a better future. His influence continues to resonate in the lives of those he helped and in the work we carry on in his memory.”
Lou’s approach reflected the very best values of the Michigan Works! system—responsibility, integrity, and compassion. He trained and mentored new staff, assisted the Unemployment Insurance Agency during the pandemic, and consistently sought the best outcomes for everyone he served.
Ryan Hundt, Chief Executive Officer of the Michigan Works! Association, said, “Lou Sterling represented the spirit of Michigan Works! through his steady leadership, kindness, and unwavering commitment to people. He exemplified what it means to serve with purpose, and his legacy will continue to inspire those who dedicate their careers to helping others succeed.”
Lou was remembered during the Michigan Works! Association Annual Conference in Kalamazoo, where his impact and legacy were celebrated by colleagues and friends from across the state.
