Jayson Lewis
- Food Assistance Employment and Training (FAE&T)
Jayson Lewis spent the last decade facing significant challenges. After ten years in prison, he was determined to turn his life around and reconnect with his four children following the tragic passing of his wife in March 2023. Although he couldn’t be there for her during her final moments, he had the chance to say goodbye over the phone. Her passing left a void in their children’s lives that Jayson was committed to filling.
Upon his release, Jayson knew he had to step up as a father and provider. While he developed various job skills while incarcerated, transitioning into the workforce remained daunting. He needed to secure a job, obtain a driver’s license, and gather work supplies.
In July 2024, Jayson was referred to the SEMCA Michigan Works! Monroe American Job Center through the Offender Success program. Working with Re-Entry Liaison Cari Grahl, he was dual enrolled in the FAE&T (Food Assistance Employment and Training) program to access additional essential resources.
Despite initial setbacks, Jayson’s determination paid off. After applying for a position at Toledo Steel Supply, he was hired as a Final Technician Inspector in July 2024, earning $16 per hour. Just a month later, he was promoted to Crane Operator, increasing his hourly wage to $18 per hour.
Support from SEMCA Michigan Works! was crucial. The program covered the cost of his driver’s license road test, which he passed, and provided gas cards for interviews and work. While Jayson saves for his own car, family members assist with rides.
Jayson’s journey reflects resilience and the strength of family bonds. “I’m so glad to be home and be reunited with my kids. They needed me more than anything especially after my wife passed away. They are so excited I’m home, and it feels good to be out and working again; I’m getting my life back together. When I first got out, I was so worried about how I was going to accomplish everything but with the help of Cari and SEMCA Michigan Works!, I was hired at Toledo Steel. I feel like I would still be stuck in the mud but SEMCA Michigan Works! got me on a successful path. They helped me tear down barriers I didn’t think I would get past in the short amount of time that I did.”
Jayson’s story showcases the power of determination and community support. As he builds a new life for himself and his family, SEMCA Michigan Works! is proud to have played a role in his journey.
