Rachel Farrer came to the Michigan Works Southgate Service Center seeking Nursing Assistant/Aide and Patient Care Technician training. Rachel had recently relocated to Michigan from Alabama. Rachel had been job searching, but was having a difficult time finding employment. Rachel had been a Nursing Assistant at Hanceville Nursing Home in Hanceville, Alabama, making $9.25 an hour but she was not certified as a CNA. Rachel has a passion for working with people and wanted to further her career, so after researching the training opportunities offered by Michigan Works, she decided to pursue the Patient Care Specialist certification offered at Greater Horizon Training Institute in Detroit.

Rachel moved in with her mother and juggled raising her two daughters while attending her accelerated training at Greater Horizon Training Institute. Rachel told her Career Development Facilitator (CDF), Rita Brylinsky, that she was committed to providing her family with a better life and achieving her dream of employment in the healthcare field.

Rachel said, “I came to Southgate Michigan Works at a very challenging time in my life. I have two daughters and had no means of supporting them. Southgate Michigan Works provided the tuition assistance I needed to achieve my goals and provide a better life for myself and my girls.”

After completing her training and passing the Michigan State Boards, Rachel aggressively job searched and landed a position as a Patient Care Specialist with Southgate Medical Center in Southgate. With Rachel’s hard work, positive attitude, and dedication, it didn’t take Rachel very long to impress her employer and she was promoted to Office Manager, and also received a pay increase after only two months!
