Jones Chemicals, Inc. (JCI) is the largest re-packager of Chlorine and one of the largest Industrial Bleach manufacturers in the world.

Donald Skidmore Jr, Branch Manager for JCI, has made a strong commitment to hire Veterans whenever possible. A recent upturn in business created a full-time employment opportunity and Don reached out to the SEMCA Southgate Michigan Works Center to discuss the opening, and his interest in hiring a Veteran.

Lisa Wayne, Michigan Works WIA Manager, along with the local Veterans Representative, Charles Hayes, met with Don to learn more about JCI and the open position. Don took them on a tour of the plant and introduced them to key staff. The team-oriented approach of the company was impressive.

Immediately after the visit, both Charles and Lisa begin screening candidates and forwarded resumes to Don. He then selected candidates to come in to complete an application and interview. Within a matter of days, several keys applicants were identified and soon a candidate – a Veteran – Kevin Nabors, was hired!

JCI has received special recognition from the Office of the Secretary of Defense and received an award for being a “Patriotic Employer”. Currently, at the JCI Riverview Branch, six of its 15 employees are Veterans.

Lisa Wayne said, “It is our refreshing to know there are employers dedicated to hiring our Veterans and it is our privilege to assist JCI with their hiring needs.”

JCI was also able to recently re-hire an office worker – Sandy Garber – through Michigan Works.

Don Skidmore stated, “Sandy was warmly accepted back and she brought with her many skills she learned through Michigan Works. I am very happy with my new fellow teammates brought on board through The Michigan Works Southgate Service Center. I believe we are on the right path for a very long, professional working relationship.”

All involved agree that the key to the hiring of Kevin Nabors was the site visit with all partners in attendance. During this visit, everyone gained a fuller understanding of each other’s needs and this lead to a successful outcome.
