- Partnership. Accountability. Training. Hope. (PATH)
Mariya Derunova’s story resonates the power of resilience, hard work, and the support systems provided by SEMCA Michigan Works!. Mariya arrived in the United States as a refugee from Ukraine in the fall of 2022, seeking a new life for herself and her 9-year-old son. Faced with the daunting task of starting over in a new country, she turned to the programming available through the SEMCA Michigan Works! Livonia American Job Center (AJC), which became the catalyst for her incredible journey.
Through the PATH program, Mariya was referred to Zaman International, where she enrolled in industrial sewing training, workforce readiness classes, and ESL instruction. These programs, combined with the continuous support from her Michigan Works! coach and Zaman’s Client Services department, provided Mariya with the skills and confidence she needed to thrive. The supportive services included case management, basic needs assistance, and other resources that were instrumental in her path to financial stability.
Mariya’s dedication to her education and training was evident through her remarkable achievements: she made significant strides in improving her English proficiency, achieving notable advancements in her CASAS scores. Additionally, she earned key educational certifications, including from the Leaders Advancing and Helping Communities Mental Wellbeing Program, MSU Extension Nutrition Education Healthy Foods/Healthy Families, and Zaman’s Workforce Readiness program. Mariya also reached a personal milestone by obtaining her driver’s license, enhancing her independence and mobility.
In February 2023, Mariya’s hard work culminated in her employment at Zaman’s Sewing Factory as a sewing machine operator. Her exceptional performance and commitment led to her acceptance as Zaman’s second sewing apprentice. By mastering her competencies, Mariya is set to graduate as a journeyworker in the spring of 2024.
Beyond her professional achievements, Mariya has emerged as a leader within Zaman’s Sewing Factory. She has taken on special projects and served as a mentor to her peers, exemplifying the spirit of collaboration and community support that has been a cornerstone of her journey.
In November 2023, Mariya reached another significant milestone by receiving her Green Card, solidifying her status and opening new doors for her and her son in their adopted homeland.
Mariya reflects, “I came to the US after the war in Ukraine with my 9-year-old son. I was anxious and scared but ready to start a new life in America. I studied and worked hard. Zaman and my SEMCA Michigan Works! coach gave me the confidence to move forward. They supported me to be a sewing apprentice and start my career.”
