Mark Trent
- Adult
Mark Trent held a part-time manufacturing job at Yapp Automotive, earning $17.50 per hour. Concerned about fluctuating hours, he faced uncertainties regarding his future, income, and job stability. Mark had struggled for years in short-term positions and layoffs within the automotive industry. Recognizing the need to advance his career and inspired by his brother’s success as a truck driver, he decided to update his skills and embark on a new plan.
In November 2021, Mark visited the SEMCA Michigan Works! Wayne American Job Center, registering for a Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) orientation to kickstart his career. Learning about available resources, he enrolled in the WIOA program as an underemployed adult in December. Meeting with his Career Coach, Barry Brickey, Mark explored potential paths in the transportation industry. After researching training providers, Mark selected Bert’s Testing & Training for their CDL-A course. Mark secured full tuition coverage through the H1B Industry Infinity grant, enabling him to chip away at the course with 2-hour training blocks while still working part-time. The WIOA program also provided supportive service funding through the Barrier Removal & Employment Success (BRES) program, assisting with childcare and covering necessary training fees. Despite the extended duration of his class, Mark remained focused and determined, passing his road test and obtaining his CDL-A license in September 2022.
After applying to local companies, Mark found an opportunity with GFL Environmental Inc., (formerly Waste Management). Joining as a Driver’s Helper in November 2022, he learned the routes and routines for customer pickups. He quickly earned a promotion to a Driver position, now making $22 per hour with full benefits. Impressed with Mark’s quick adaptation to the role, his supervisors offered further training for operating their bucket trucks (recycling), ensuring an almost $2 per hour increase.
Mark is content with his current income and appreciates the ample hours available with the company. Learning extensively as a Driver, he sees this role as a steppingstone toward a career as a truck driver in larger vehicles. Reflecting on his experience with SEMCA Michigan Works!, Mark stated, “I am so thankful for this program. It really helped me out, and I’m grateful for everything. The training process was also great.” He concluded with a powerful message: “Never let a situation determine your destination.” Mark is truly determined to succeed.
