Rosalina Alvarado
- Partnership. Accountability. Training. Hope. (PATH)
At 33, Rosalina Alvarado found herself at a crossroads. Living in a small apartment with her four-year-old son, she juggled multiple low-paying jobs in housekeeping and customer service at Walmart and local hotels. Despite working long hours, financial stress was a constant burden—bills piled up, car repairs loomed, and the fear of not being able to provide a better life for her son weighed heavily on her.
She longed for a future where stability replaced struggle, where she could build a life defined by opportunity rather than uncertainty. Rosalina knew that to make this change, she needed more than just another job—she needed a career. That realization led her to SEMCA Michigan Works! in May 2024, where she joined the Partnership. Accountability. Training. Hope. (PATH) program. With guidance from her career coach, she explored training options, ultimately enrolling in a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program that fit her schedule.
Helping others had always brought Rosalina a sense of fulfillment, and her career coach saw in her a natural caregiver—someone whose empathy and dedication would make her an asset to the healthcare field. But the path forward was anything but easy. Balancing motherhood with rigorous coursework was overwhelming, and self-doubt crept in at times. However, Rosalina refused to let obstacles define her. Through the supportive services available through SEMCA Michigan Works!, she secured much-needed car repairs, eliminating a major barrier to her success.
She also leaned on her support system—her friends, her mother, and her son’s grandmother—who stepped in to help with childcare, school pickups, and encouragement when she needed it most. Rosalina stayed the course. Her perseverance paid off when she successfully graduated from the CNA program and began preparing for her state certification exam.
But her journey didn’t end there. Recognizing her determination and passion, her school invited her back as a guest speaker to inspire new students. Rosalina now applies for healthcare positions with confidence, knowing she has the skills and experience to succeed thanks to the resources available through SEMCA Michigan Works!. She recalls the moment she completed her program, overwhelmed with emotion as she proudly declared, “I DID IT!”
Today, Rosalina is a proud mother who no longer feels trapped by her circumstances. She has discovered her passion, gained a career path, and is setting an inspiring example for her son. Her journey demonstrates that with perseverance, courage, and the right support, it’s possible to break free from the cycle of hardship and build a future filled with hope and opportunity.
