Army Veteran finds success with Pure Michigan Talent Connect 24-Hour Veterans List.

Douglas Carroll or “Doug” as he is known to the Michigan Works! Livonia Service Center staff, was a regular customer of the center since 2014. Doug is also a Veteran who served honorably in the United States Army.

For the last three years, Doug worked with a number of Career Specialists at the Center, where he received assistance with job search. He particularly needed help with attaching resumes, faxing, and navigating the internet for resources.

One of those resources is the Pure Michigan Talent Connect 24-Hour Veterans List. As a courtesy to the many men and women who serve our country, Michigan Works! provides this list daily. This is a comprehensive list of employers who reserve job opening for our Veterans for the first 24 hours of posting on the Pure Michigan Talent Connect website.

Like many Veterans, Doug stated that what he appreciates most from Michigan Works! is the effort staff make to ensure that every Veteran has access to this list.

“I personally benefited greatly from the 24-hour Veterans list. Through them, I was able to connect with many employers throughout Southeast Michigan. Receiving them (the list) meant I could have advance access to jobs, and perhaps have a better chance of being hired by employers.”

Of the many barriers Doug stated he had to overcome, one of the biggest was transportation. As a Detroit resident, using public transportation can be quite challenging. Another barrier was his lack of internet computer skills. Doug credits the staff at the Michigan Works! Livonia Service Center for their instruction with the internet job search process, which for Doug, was the biggest challenge of all.

However, with perseverance and a willingness to become self-sufficient, Doug is now working for The Detroit Housing Commission as a Maintenance Technician. Doug began his new position on September 11, 2017 and is now working full-time. Doug stated he enjoys his new job very much, especially the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of seniors.
