Alissa Allen
- Youth (WIOA)
In May 2023, Alissa Allen sought assistance at the SEMCA Michigan Works! Wayne American Job Center, aspiring to embark on a career as a dental assistant and achieve independence. At that time, she, along with her 9-month-old daughter, depended on food stamps and family support. Recognizing the importance of independence, Alissa acknowledged the need for a little boost to propel her forward.
Upon enrollment into the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Youth program, Alissa was matched with a dedicated Career Coach, Kelly Karinen. Kelly provided guidance in career exploration and the development of a compelling resume. The program facilitated her admission to the Michigan Dental Assisting School in Farmington Hills, MI, where she began her training in June 2023. Support services played a crucial role in ensuring smooth transportation to and from her training sessions. Driven by determination, Alissa demonstrated remarkable dedication, earning her dental assistant certificate in July 2023.
With unwavering support from her Career Coach, Alissa secured a full-time position at Great Expressions in Canton, with a competitive wage of $19 per hour. Reflecting on her journey, Alissa expressed gratitude, stating, “Without the assistance of SEMCA Michigan Works! and my Career Coach, I wouldn’t be employed and on my way to supporting my family. I am thankful for all their help.”
Alissa’s narrative stands as a testament to the transformative impact of the WIOA Youth program staff. By utilizing services tailored to her needs, Alissa not only attained full-time employment as a dental assistant but is also poised to take on the responsibility of independently supporting her family. Her success serves as a shining example of the rapid and effective outcomes achievable through SEMCA Michigan Works!.
