Revolutionizing the Detroit Region
The world is experiencing a once-in-a-century mobility revolution, and the Detroit region is poised to ensure the U.S. leads the way.
Through an inclusive and equitable lens, Global Epicenter of Mobility (GEM) will help the Detroit Region redefine every aspect of mobility – from the cutting-edge technology that moves people and goods in new and exciting ways, to creating new quality new jobs and readying new sites for business.
GEM’s vision is to accelerate economic growth by building on the region’s unrivaled mobility assets. It will create a smart, secure, sustainable, and inclusive advanced-mobility industry, starting with the transition to next-generation electric, autonomous, and fully connected vehicles.

The Global Epicenter of Mobility is designed to support mobility in every sense of the word, from the transition to autonomous and electric vehicles to social and economic mobility,” said Maureen Donohue Krauss, CEO of the Detroit Regional Partnership. “Building on 400+ unique assets, GEM will support workers, startups, and existing companies so they can adapt to the rapidly evolving advanced mobility industry and create the new high-quality jobs of the future.”
Talent is fundamental to the success of the region’s advanced mobility cluster. With rapidly changing technologies and a looming retirement cliff, there is need to create highly-skilled, diverse talent and help existing workers remain relevant. The region houses many workforce and talent resources, but companies struggle to understand and navigate them. As the industry undergoes digital transformation, today’s workers face irrelevancy and barriers to advancement.
By better understanding labor needs and creating seamless skill-building opportunities, this project ensures that the region is inclusive and thoughtful in solving the advanced-mobility talent gap. The $16.4 million invested in this project creates suites of business- and talent-facing services to support growth and development of new and existing talent, from skilled trades to systems engineers, while increasing connectivity across the region’s broad network of talent service providers.
Business-facing services include assessment and consulting to better understand skill needs, connection to available supports, and innovative hiring strategies. Talent-facing services include training dollars, success support and inclusion strategies for historically excluded populations. Meanwhile, the network will deliver critical improvements such as career pathways and articulation agreements that can help workers advance at the speed of today’s technology. Together, this project seeks to create a “radical inclusion acceleration” model that will support the region as a global leader in mobility innovation.
