SEMCA Michigan Works! and Wayne-Westland Community Schools hosted a celebration at Hype Athletics in Wayne to honor the graduates of the Pathways to the Workforce program. This transformative initiative, supported by federal funding secured by Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, has helped local students gain critical job skills, paid internships, and free driver education.
The event celebrated the program’s achievements and its profound impact on students and the community, bringing together graduates, employers, educators, and partners.
“Pathways to the Workforce is a testament to what’s possible when we work together to eliminate barriers for young people,” said Gregory Pitoniak, CEO of SEMCA Michigan Works! “This program is providing students with life-changing opportunities, equipping them with the tools to succeed in the workforce and beyond.”
The program launched with $850,000 in FY2022 Congressional Appropriations, secured by Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, enabling students to overcome barriers to employment and driver education.

“We are grateful for Congresswoman Tlaib’s unwavering support of our youth,” said Maria Mitter, Supervisor of College and Career Readiness and program coordinator. “Her advocacy has been pivotal in eliminating financial barriers for families and providing our students with job training opportunities and a pathway to obtaining their driver’s licenses—an essential step toward independence and career success.”
Program Highlights:
- 145 Students Served: Graduates participated in internships with 26 local employers, gaining hands-on experience and workplace skills.
- Driver Education at No Cost: Free driver education helped students overcome a key barrier to workforce readiness.
- Eligibility Requirements: Students maintained a 2.0+ GPA, strong attendance, and no suspensions to participate.
Jennifer Curry, Interim Superintendent of Wayne-Westland Community Schools, highlighted the program’s impact: “This program is about more than job training or learning to drive—it’s about equipping students with the tools to succeed in life and work.”

The celebration featured student testimonials, speeches from program leaders, and recognition of employers and community partners who made the initiative possible. (View more photos from the Celebration.)
