SEMCA Michigan Works! kicked off the 10th anniversary of National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) with a vibrant and successful event at Monroe County Community College’s (MCCC) Career Technology Center (CTC). X-Tech, MCCC’s Applied Technology and Apprenticeships Pathway Exploration Day, welcomed over 130 participants, including employers, students, parents, and faculty, who explored jobs, career paths, and apprenticeship opportunities in industries such as technology, engineering, skilled trades, manufacturing, and construction.
As part of the national celebration of apprenticeships, the event showcased a wealth of opportunities in Southeast Michigan. Attendees engaged with interactive exhibits, connected with industry professionals, and learned about apprenticeship programs offering hands-on experience and clear career pathways.
Stellar Lineup of Employers and Exhibitors
Eight major employers participated in the open house, hosting interactive booths that provided valuable insights into their apprenticeship programs and career opportunities. Notable participants included:
- International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW)
- Michigan Door & Windows
- Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters & Millwrights
- DTE Energy
- Army National Guard
- US Steel
- Epic Fire Prevention Services
These organizations provided firsthand exposure to the in-demand skills needed in the local workforce.
Faculty and Staff Collaboration
Parmeshwar (Peter) Coomar, Dean of Applied Science and Engineering Technology at MCCC, expressed his gratitude for the collaboration that made the event a success:
“Thank you to the faculty and staff in ASET. We had around 130 attendees in just three hours, and everyone was impressed by our programs and the chance to engage with our faculty. The trades and apprenticeship-related displays also attracted significant attention, aligning perfectly with National Apprenticeship Week.”
MCCC President Dr. Kojo A. Quartey, along with Dean Coomar, personally welcomed guests and guided them through the CTC’s cutting-edge labs, which remained active throughout the evening. The open lab demonstrations left a lasting impression on both potential apprentices and seasoned professionals.
Team Effort and Special Highlights
Kristina Henry, Experiential Learning Coordinator for the Applied Science and Engineering Technology Division, played a key role in organizing the event, ensuring everything ran smoothly. A special highlight was the presence of Stephanie Vomvolakis, Apprenticeship Training Representative from the U.S. Department of Labor, underscoring the strong partnership between SEMCA Michigan Works!, the local community, and national apprenticeship programs.
One memorable moment of the night was observing Halloween decorations being crafted in the welding lab during the open house—a fun reminder of the creativity and technical skills fostered within these programs.
Looking Ahead to More Events
As National Apprenticeship Week 2024 continues, SEMCA Michigan Works! is excited to announce its next event: a virtual RAPIDS training session for employers on November 21. This session will provide valuable insights into leveraging the Registered Apprenticeship Partners Information Data System (RAPIDS) to enhance workforce development strategies.
SEMCA Michigan Works! is thrilled to be celebrating the 10th anniversary of NAW with events like these that bring together the best of what apprenticeship programs have to offer. Together with our community partners, we’re building stronger career pathways and brighter futures.
